As a coach it’s my job to support individuals pursue their dreams. Goal setting is key to this process; each goal acts as a step towards that dream you want to achieve. Look at your life now; analyse it, assess where you are and decide where you want to go based on not just what the ideal scenario is but what’s achievable now and therefore realistic. This way you set yourself a goal that is attainable. You fulfil it then you move on to the next step, getting closer and closer to that dream.
Going after a big dream will most likely mean you’re going to make some sacrifices to get it or you’ll need to make significant changes in your life. There’s always risk attached to change. The key thing is to know what the right measure of risk is for you.
Especially for those of you who dream of someday owning your own restaurant or cafe we invited Garrett Fitzgerald, co-founder of Brother Hubbard, to talk to us about his journey from working in an office to owning a cafe in this month’s Great Life Podcast. Afterwards we talked about what is the best way to change your life. We agreed that you do it by taking baby steps.
Garrett’s baby step was doing a course on bread making whilst still in his steady office job. He told me how his grandfather used to own a bakery and that he liked the idea of learning how to bake bread to carry on a family tradition. That was his baby step.
Then serendipity played a hand in steering him to his next step because while learning to make break he met a women who had done the Ballymaloe Course. And the next step he took was enrolling in the same course…and the rest, as they say, is history.
Ballymaloe lead to a two year stint traveling in search of inspiration for what was to become Brother Hubbard. You can read the Sideprojectdubin post in which Brother Hubbard features here.
The Pinball Effect
Garrett described the process of how he changed his life as ‘a pinball effect’.
What he meant by that was this: doing one thing like completing a bread making course, that is, in the grand scheme to change your life, a baby step, can lead to another step which leads to another. The sum of all of these steps knocks over all the pins that form the structure of your life; your job, the people with whom you surround yourself, how you spend your time, what you focus your attention on, and your emotional state at a given time. When you’ve changed these things then you’ve changed your life: maybe you’ve achieved the dream you had, or maybe another dream took its place and that’s what you got instead. Either way, your life will never be as it was at the start of your journey towards your great life.
I hope you enjoyed this post. Please do let us know what baby steps you’re taking to fulfil your dreams by visiting us on our facebook page.
