What is the purpose driving House My Dog?
I felt like I wanted to do something that solved a genuine problem. It’s nice when you can see people leaving reviews and talking about how their lives have changed due to the product or service you’re now offering. My purpose comes from the dog-lover perspective – all our sitters are heavily vetted and keep owners updated. It’s nice when you have people working with you, building something together
I was very fortunate in that my co-founder is also my brother. We’d had our own family dog Holly and experienced not knowing what to do with her when we travelled. Airbnb was getting a lot of funding at the time and market place models were becoming really trendy, so we just decided to go ahead and set it up.
How do you make sure the people who work with you at House My Dog share your purpose?
We have a team of 6 dog lovers who work with us, and generally they have an interest in tech, start ups, and business. But they’re also all dog owners so they’re really passionate about solving the problem. Everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet, and the whole team really enjoys all the positive feedback – we haven’t had one bad review yet!
What is your approach to marketing House My Dog?
We use a lot of paid channels, but about 60% of our traffic comes from referrals and word of mouth, which is great to get that brand awareness out. It’s important to give people the best experience and making sure the sitters get back to them as soon as possible when they’re able to share their experience on Facebook via a link. The other 40% would come from YouTube ads etc.
What is the feedback like from pet owners?
Feedback was very positive. Pet parenting is a new aspect we’re looking at. You know, pet owners not wanting to leave their dog in a caged kennel for the stay, wanting to know with transparency that their pet is being looked after in someone’s home. A really good dog sitter is always going to be better than a kennel.
The pet industry is still quite outdated, people are looking for easier solutions than having to ask their vet, finding someone on gumtree who isn’t verified..it;s awkward if you’re a frequent traveller. You need insurance if something happens, someone who could mind your pet for weeks at a time etc.
Define a great life?
Embrace the day to day, rather than trying to attain this one happy day.
I feel if you don’t enjoy your life and your work then maybe you’re doing the wrong thing. Just enjoying what you’re aiming to do, being passionate about solving the problems you’ve set out to solve.
